On a mission to create the world's biggest index of typefaces from the world's best type foundries

Certeau specimen from A Practice for Everyday Life

A geometric sans with calligraphic lowercase details, drawing on Modernist monoline typefaces and 1930s Dutch and German sans-serif traditions.

About

Three weights with matching obliques make up this six-style family, which balances rational geometric construction against idiosyncratic calligraphic details in select lowercase letterforms. The design research behind it sought typefaces that sit between order and personality, a tension visible in the contrast between its clean uppercase and more expressive lowercase. It has found use in brand identity and editorial contexts, including the Peirene Press identity and skincare brand Everyday Oil.

Classification

Certeau draws on geometric Modernist monoline traditions alongside 1930s Dutch and German sans-serif typography, placing it firmly in the geometric sans category, though its calligraphic lowercase details give it an idiosyncratic, humanist inflection.
