displayinscribed / carved display
1903 specimen from A2-Type

A display typeface drawn from just four numerals carved into a Victorian railway datestone in East London, available in Solid and Chiseled styles.

About

Derived from the carved lettering of a datestone above a former East London railway entrance, this is not a historical revival but a contemporary interpretation of a very specific source. Available in one weight with two styles — Solid and Chiseled — the latter preserving the incised quality of the hand-carved original. Despite its display character and expressive quirks at large sizes, A2-Type designed it to remain legible at small point sizes.

Classification

Inspired directly by chiselled datestone lettering from a railway building in East London, the typeface sits firmly in the display category with its carved, inscriptional character and two styles — Solid and Chiseled — designed for impact at large sizes.
