New Rail Alphabet Stencil specimen from A2-Type

A stencil adaptation of A2-Type's revival of the British Rail alphabet, originally designed by Margaret Calvert for UK public infrastructure in the early 1960s.

About

Derived from New Rail Alphabet, A2-Type's revival of the wayfinding typeface designed by Margaret Calvert of Kinneir Calvert Associates, this stencil version retains the clarity and authority of the original system used across NHS hospitals, British Rail, Danish Rail and BAA airports. Six weights run from Off White to Black, with non-aligning numerals and a subset of Eastern European characters. The stencil treatment gives the family a functional, utilitarian edge well suited to environmental graphics, editorial and identity work referencing British public design.

Classification

A stencil variant of a humanist sans-serif wayfinding alphabet, the stencil treatment places it firmly in the display category despite its functional origins in British Rail and NHS signage.
