Granit Display specimen from Apex Foundry

A display serif by Alex Chavot drawn from vernacular letterforms found on 19th and 20th century headstones, including those at Père-Lachaise cemetery.

About

Alex Chavot gathered letterforms from funerary stonecutting across two centuries and reworked them into a display typeface with a contemporary sensibility. The family ships in Regular and Italic, with an extensive OpenType feature set including small capitals, discretionary ligatures, multiple numeral styles and stylistic alternates for r and y. The depth of the glyph set and the historical grounding of the letterforms make it well suited to editorial and cultural work where a singular, material quality is required.

Classification

Granit Display is a display serif drawing on vernacular letterforms from 19th and 20th century headstones, giving it a distinctive lapidary character that sits firmly in the display category rather than any conventional serif subcategory.
