At Koba specimen from Arillatype

A single-weight capitalis monumentalis drawn from Basque stone-engraving traditions, designed by calligrapher Jon Zabalegui and released in 2024.

About

Rooted in the cemetery and house-front letterings of the Basque Pyrenees, the design takes the capitalis monumentalis form and brings it into contemporary use via calligraphic hand rather than mechanical interpretation. The family ships with discretionary ligatures, contextual alternates, stylistic alternates and ordinals, with particular attention paid to historical monogram forms. A single Regular weight serves branding, packaging and editorial contexts where regional character and engraved authority are the point.

Classification

Modelled on capitalis monumentalis engraving traditions specific to the Basque Country, with calligraphic origins and monogram references drawn from regional stone lettering. Sits firmly in the display category due to its single weight and ornamental character.
