slabsemi-slabitalic
Lang specimen from ArrowType

A semi-slab family derived from 19th-century gravestone lettering at Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery, spanning nine weights with a semi-script italic.

About

Drawn from carved lettering on the Grinnell family monument at Green-Wood Cemetery, Lang pairs slab-serif uppercase letters with a simplified semi-slab lowercase across a weight range from Thin to Black. The italic departs from a mechanical slant, picking up on script qualities found in adjacent monuments, and includes optional swash capitals for additional ornamentation. OpenType features cover small caps, oldstyle and tabular figures, extensive ligatures and contextual alternates, with full variable font support across 2 variable and 16 static files.

Classification

Lang occupies the boundary between slab serif and sans-serif: the uppercase uses classic slab-serif construction derived from 19th-century gravestone lettering, while the lowercase adopts a simplified semi-slab structure, making it distinctly a semi-slab family.
