Inspired by amateur lettering in Spanish/Hispanic Catholic churches that attempted to echo the grandeur of the Vatican but arrived somewhere entirely their own, Drone captures the charm of forms that are copies of copies. The letterforms also carry traces of 16th-century English calligraphy, giving the face an unexpected historical depth beneath its vernacular surface. Barnbrook frames it conceptually as the low hum of advertising and programmed persuasion, lending the typeface a pointed cultural edge.
