Maíz specimen from Bastarda

A single-case variable display typeface from Bastarda in which star-shaped counterforms expand progressively across three states, evoking the burst of a popcorn kernel.

About

Built entirely from uppercase letters owing to its geometric complexity, the family offers three styles — Uno, Dos and Tres — in which the interior counterforms grow larger with each step, following a logic of formal transformation rather than the conventional axes of weight or width. The variability is explicitly experimental rather than functional, though the foundry notes that even the most expanded version retains usable typographic qualities. Extended Latin diacritics are supported alongside a small set of custom ornamental glyphs labelled as grass forms.

Classification

An experimental variable display face built on a single-case uppercase geometric structure, with star-shaped counterforms that expand across three states. Its purely formal variability and decorative counterforms place it firmly in the display category.
