FRAC
Binnenland · Nik Thoenen · 2003

A grid-based geometric display face built for signage and corporate identity, constructed entirely from straight lines on a seven-by-seven dot matrix.
About
Designed by Nik Thoenen in 2003 for the Fonds régional d'art contemporain de Lorraine in Metz, FRAC is an uppercase-only typeface in which every letterform is resolved through minimal dot connections on a rigid seven-by-seven grid. All strokes are straight, all terminals are abrupt, and weight increases follow a halving ratio applied to the same underlying skeleton. The approach follows early CAD single-stroke lettering conventions, prioritising independence and legibility of each character over decorative expression.
Classification
FRAC is a strictly geometric uppercase-only display typeface built on a seven-by-seven dot grid using only straight lines and sharp angles, placing it firmly in the modular geometric display tradition derived from early CAD and constructivist lettering.
