Avril specimen from Blaze Type

A semi-connecting script in five weights drawn from mid-century French sign-painting, with loopy curves that suggest a single unbroken line.

About

Designed by Laurene Girbal and released in 2023, Avril takes its cue from Jean Joveneaux's 1950s French sign-painting manual, translating that loose, brush-driven rhythm into a digital script with low-contrast strokes and expressive letterforms. Five weights from Thin to Bold give it range: lighter cuts hold up in short paragraphs while the heavier styles suit headlines and display work. A variable font file ships alongside the static formats.

Classification

Described explicitly as a script typeface, loosely inspired by French sign painting with expressive semi-connecting characters and loopy curves that mimic dynamic handwriting.
