Mack specimen from Blaze Type

A humanist sans with geometric bones and angled, brush-influenced terminals, drawn from lettering found on a map of Mackinac Island.

About

Designed by Nathan Metzler and Matthieu Salvaggio and released in 2021, Mack takes the proportional structure of mid-century geometric typefaces but softens it with curves and terminals that echo the angle of a brush stroke. The spark was hand-lettering on a map of Mackinac Island, whose pointed peaks and varied proportions suggested a different direction from strict geometry. Twelve styles run from Thin to Black with matching italics, all available as a variable font.

Classification

Described explicitly as a humanist sans serif; its geometric structure is softened by angled terminals and brush-influenced curves, placing it firmly in the humanist sans category rather than strict geometric.
