Solae
Blaze Type · Gwennina Moigne · 2025

A Romain du Roi revival by Gwennina Moigne that replaces the conventional italic with a 9° rotated "rotalic" cut, accompanied by over 2,000 glyphs including astrological symbols and extensive ligature sets.
About
Designed by Gwennina Moigne and released in 2025, Solae takes the Romain du Roi as its historical anchor whilst introducing a rotalic style, a 9° rotation meant to echo orbital movement, in place of a traditional sloped roman. The family carries over 2,082 glyphs covering 100+ languages, moon phase symbols, astrological characters and a large array of uppercase and lowercase ligatures suited to editorial, poster and identity work. The celestial framing and the Sun King namecheck are conceptually coherent rather than decorative: the delicate stroke contrast and rigorous structure stay close to the Romain du Roi's origins.
Classification
A revival inspired by Romain du Roi, the late 17th-century transitional serif commissioned by Louis XIV, placing it firmly in the transitional category with its high contrast and vertical stress, though given a distinctive contemporary treatment with a rotalic variant instead of a conventional italic.
