Agate Recut specimen from Bloom Type

A redesigned display serif by Baptiste Guesnon, combining incised letter forms with wide serifs and alternating sharp and circular curves across six weights.

About

Originally conceived in 2016 as an experimental proto-variable font for Strates, an architecture magazine, the design was reworked and re-released in spring 2025 as a fully fledged family with six weights and a variable font file. Its letterforms play between angular, stone-cut geometry and soft circular arcs, referencing both the agate gemstone and the historic 5.5-point typographic measure of the same name. OpenType features include oldstyle figures, tabular figures, discretionary ligatures, case alternates and several stylistic sets.

Classification

The foundry describes a blend of incised and modern serif characteristics, with extra-wide serifs and alternating sharp angles and soft geometric curves, placing it firmly in display serif territory.
