Spyre specimen from British Standard Type

A neo-classical serif in two distinct subfamilies, one optimised for text and the other reintroducing higher contrast and traditional proportions drawn from engraving traditions.

About

Originating from a type design programme at Kingston School of Art, Spyre began as a revival of Trajan's Inscription before incorporating lowercase forms drawn from old-style and transitional references including Plantin and Times New Roman. The standard Spyre family is built for text, with sturdy serifs, balanced cap widths and a generous x-height, while Spyre Epoch subverts those conventions with heightened contrast, pointed and splayed serifs, and traditional narrower caps. Fourteen styles are offered across both subfamilies, with variable font support included.

Classification

Described as neo-classical, Spyre traces Roman forms through to transitional influences including Times New Roman and Plantin, with the Epoch subfamily introducing higher contrast and splayed serifs closer to old-style conventions.
