Ping Pong specimen from Capitalics

A digitisation of Elżbieta Krużyńska's 1974 raster surface typeface, originally designed for phototypesetting matrices using halftone dot structures.

About

Originally conceived in 1974 by Elżbieta Krużyńska at the Research and Development Center for the Printing Industry in Poland, the typeface used rasterised letterforms in positive and negative variants intended for phototypesetting matrix production. The 2020 digitisation by Mateusz Machalski and Małgorzata Bartosik adapted the raster to screen display and expanded the character set to cover extended Latin, using a custom vector processing program developed by professor Piotr Welk. The result is a rare piece of Polish graphic heritage made available as a functioning typeface.

Classification

Ping Pong is a rasterised surface typeface originally designed for phototypesetting matrices, with its halftone dot-grid structure placing it firmly in the display category as a bitmap or raster-style decorative face.
