Developed between 2018 and 2022, Sztos takes Baccarat — a grotesque published by Jan Idźkowski i S-ka in 1922 — as its starting point, updating the drawing and proportions while keeping traces of traditional Polish printing craft. The family spans 10 weights from Hairline to Black across normal and condensed widths, each with matching italics, totalling 40 styles plus a variable font. The contrast between the wider normal and tighter condensed cuts makes the family well suited to expressive typographic combinations in editorial and branding contexts.
Classification
Sztos is a modernised remix of Baccarat, a Polish grotesque from 1922, retaining historical printing details while updating proportions — placing it firmly in the grotesque tradition with a central European vernacular character.
