AM Macallè
CAST · Alessandro Colizzi · 2025

A digital revival of a bold Italian wood type from 1936, faithful to Xilografia Internazionale's Macallè with an inline variant and wide circular alternates accessed via OpenType stylistic sets.
About
Originally issued as wood type by Xilografia Internazionale of Legnago around 1936 and available up to 20-line sizes, the face is notable for its compressed proportions, very large x-height and Art Déco low crossbars that extend leftward beyond the stems. Designer Alessandro Colizzi's revival incorporates the former inline companion Adigrat as a stylistic set alongside a second set of wide, circular alternates for C, G and O, making the whole system more flexible than its historical source. The result suits poster and headline work where early-twentieth-century Italian graphic vernacular is the reference point.
Classification
A bold, compressed sanserif revival of a 1936 Italian wood type, featuring Art Déco details such as low crossbars that extend beyond stems and wide circular alternates; classified as display given its single weight, compressed proportions and decorative lineage.
