AM Panama
CAST · Giulio Galli · 2024

A digital revival of a 1930s Italian wood type, bringing its Art Deco geometry and idiosyncratic detailing into a single-weight display face.
About
Drawn by Giulio Galli from wood type specimens held at the Tipoteca Italiana Fondazione, AM Panama restores a monolinear sanserif originally cut by the Xilografia Meneghello e Belluzzo in six body sizes during the 1930s and 40s. Its geometry is sharpened by pointed apexes, diamond-shaped stroke endings, exaggerated apertures and a missing crossbar on the A, giving it a loud, distinctive rhythm at display sizes. The original companion design Suez, a semi-outlined version of the same letterforms, is included as a stylistic set via OpenType.
Classification
A single-weight geometric sans revival drawn from 1930s–40s Art Deco wood type, with idiosyncratic expressive details that push it firmly into display territory rather than workhorse sans-serif.
