AM Serie 605
CAST · Alessandro Bombieri · 2024

A digital revival of a Milanese wood type from 1938-40, retaining Art Deco geometry and decorative stem extensions while adding optical refinements and OpenType alternates.
About
Originally produced by the Xilografia Milanese between 1938 and 1940, Serie 605 is an all-caps geometric sans with circular C, G, O and Q forms contrasting against otherwise condensed letters, cut corners on B, D, P and R, and horizontal strokes extending from central bars and stems. Designer Alessandro Bombieri standardised the stem extensions, introduced optical overshoots and added narrow alternates for the wide circular letters. Two stylistic sets allow switching between the distinctive extended strokes and cleaner, more restrained forms.
Classification
An all-caps geometric sans with Art Deco characteristics, originally a 1930s wood type revival. The decorative horizontal strokes, pixel-like corner cutouts and circular O forms place it firmly in the display category despite its geometric sans structure.
