AM Serie 704
CAST · Stefano Baldassari · 2024

A digital revival of a bold condensed all-caps face originally released by Milan's Xilografia Milanese in the late 1930s, faithfully reconstructed with subtle corrections by Stefano Baldassari.
About
The original Serie 704 was a condensed sanserif distinguished by strong thick/thin contrast and modular geometric construction, with flattened inner curves and conspicuously thick terminal strokes on C, G and S. The revival, produced by Stefano Baldassari for CAST, stays close to the source while adding a horizontal bar to G, adjusting the ampersand to cap height, and expanding the character set for contemporary use. The high contrast recalls Nebiolo typefaces such as Quirinus and Hastile, situating the face in a specific tradition of Italian display type from the interwar period.
Classification
A bold all-caps condensed sans with strong thick/thin contrast and geometric, modular construction; its high contrast and condensed proportions place it firmly in the display category, reviving a late-1930s Italian wood type tradition.
