CAST · Alessandro Bombieri · 2024

A digital revival of an Italian wood type from the 1930s, retaining the expressionist angularity and hand-cut character of the original Xilografia Italiana specimen.
About
Originally produced as wood type by Xilografia Italiana around the time of Mussolini's mass settlement of Libya, the typeface carries a charged historical context behind its stark geometric forms. Bombieri's revival rationalises the original's flaws for the digital environment while preserving the abrupt angles, flattened arches and sharp triangular strokes that give it its raw, poster-cut character. With a single weight and no italics, it is purpose-built for display use where texture and historical weight matter.
Classification
An all-caps geometric sans with expressionist characteristics drawn from early 20th-century Central European poster lettering, featuring abrupt angular strokes and sharp triangular details that place it firmly in the display category.
