Bissaboa specimen from CAST

A unicase display face by Alessandro Bombieri built on ribbon-like letterforms whose high thick-and-thin contrast comes from geometrically bent strokes rather than calligraphic tradition.

About

Designed by Alessandro Bombieri and released in 2020, Bissaboa takes its name from a Venetian mythological creature associated with zigzag and serpentine movement. Its letterforms follow a strict geometric construction, with contrast produced entirely by the bending of continuous ribbon-like strokes, evoking the Möbius strip, the Ouroboros and the double helix. Two character sets are provided via OpenType stylistic sets: outlined glyphs as default and filled glyphs as an alternative, allowing the two to be combined for multicolour titling work.

Classification

A single-weight unicase display face with high contrast derived from ribbon-like, geometrically constructed stroke bending rather than traditional calligraphic means. Intended exclusively for titling and display use.
