Capraia specimen from CAST

A book typeface by Giulio Galli born from the collision of Caslon and Baskerville, with unconventional letterforms that read quietly in text and reveal themselves at display sizes.

About

Designed between 2018 and 2020, Capraia began as a tribute to Caslon's Great Primer before Baskerville took hold, producing a seven-weight family with matching italics and variable font counterparts. A large x-height, medium contrast and wide bracketed serifs anchor it firmly in continuous reading, while details like ball terminals, an idiosyncratic G and Q, and slanted roman italics keep it from feeling conventional. The Book weight addresses lighter preferences common among Italian publishers, and the slightly heavier Regular is pitched at the wider international market.

Classification

Capraia draws from both Caslon and Baskerville traditions, combining bracketed serifs, medium contrast and a big x-height in a manner consistent with transitional serif classification. Unconventional letterforms and slanted roman italics give it a contemporary inflection.
