Gil Modern specimen from CAST

A single-weight display typeface by Valerio Monopoli drawing on Lombardic capitals and Catalan Art Nouveau lettering, named after the patron of Barcelona's Hospital de la Santa Creu i de Sant Pau.

About

Designed around the ornamental P and G letterforms found throughout Lluís Domènech i Montaner's Hospital de la Santa Creu i de Sant Pau, the typeface extends those Lombardic capitals across a full alphabet, pairing them with a rounded seriffed lowercase informed by Domènech's own modernist magazine mastheads. Swashes and drop terminals appear in both cases, and several stylistic sets offer more conventional alternates where the more extreme forms would be out of place. Suited to dropcaps, display headlines and decorative titling, it carries a medieval weight alongside the organic curves of fin-de-siècle Catalan design.

Classification

A low-contrast display typeface with Lombardic capitals and rounded seriffed lowercase, rooted in medieval and Catalan Art Nouveau lettering traditions rather than any conventional text serif classification.
