Magmo
CAST · Nacir Imache · 2024

A contemporary serif by Nacir Imache whose stroke swellings are derived from burning paper experiments, set against proportions drawn from Caslon's 1727 type specimen.
About
The organic globules that swell within Magmo's strokes were generated by studying the charred edges of burning paper, producing a thick/thin contrast that intensifies markedly as weight increases. Despite this unusual formal origin, the design anchors itself in William Caslon's English and Great Primer body sizes, giving the lighter weights sufficient classical regularity for text use at small sizes. Nine weights with matching slanted versions are available as both static fonts and a variable font with weight and slant axes.
Classification
Magmo draws on Caslon's proportions from the 1727 type specimen while introducing highly irregular, organic stroke swellings derived from burning paper experiments, placing it in a contemporary expressive serif tradition.
