Scatterplot
CAST · Giulio Galli · 2024

A variable dot-matrix slab serif with a dual axis controlling weight and randomness, built on a strict modular grid with no optical corrections.
About
Designed by Giulio Galli, Scatterplot constructs each letterform from dots arranged on a geometric grid, with the Weight axis increasing dot diameter without any optical compensation and the Random axis scattering dots progressively until legibility breaks down entirely. Static fonts offer four weights crossed with four levels of randomness, from Mild to UltraWild, giving 20 preset styles alongside the variable font. Lighter settings produce the look of an old matrix printer at text sizes, while heavier and wilder combinations suit posters, titles and animated work.
Classification
A slab serif constructed entirely from dots on a modular grid, with a variable Random axis that progressively dissolves legibility; the dot-matrix construction and brutalist weight axis place it firmly in the display category.
