slabdisplay slab serif
Montagu Slab specimen from Catalogue (Florian Karsten)

A variable slab serif by Florian Karsten drawing on 19th-century classical design, with an optical size axis that shifts x-height, contrast and aperture from text to display use.

About

The optical size axis is the defining feature here: at the text end it offers a generous x-height and open apertures suited to body copy, while at the display end it tightens spacing, heightens contrast and introduces prominent upturned tails. A single variable file covers both extremes and everything between. Language support extends to Latin Vietnamese, Pinyin and all Western, Central and South-Eastern European scripts, alongside OpenType features including superscript and subscript numerals, fractions and stylistic alternates.

Classification

A 19th-century-inspired slab serif with a variable optical size axis that shifts from text-friendly to high-contrast display. The upturned tails and variable contrast place it firmly in the classical display slab tradition.
