sans-serifgrotesque
Space Grotesk specimen from Catalogue (Florian Karsten)

A proportional grotesque adapted from Colophon Foundry's Space Mono, preserving its distinctive monospace character while improving legibility at text sizes.

About

Florian Karsten drew Space Grotesk in 2018 as a proportional variant of Space Mono, retaining the fixed-width original's idiosyncratic stroke details and terminals rather than smoothing them away. The result sits between a conventional grotesque and something with more mechanical personality, making it a reasonable choice for interfaces, editorial work or branding that wants a technical edge without committing to a monospace. Language support covers Latin Vietnamese, Pinyin, and Western, Central and South-Eastern European scripts, with OpenType features including old-style figures, tabular figures, fractions and stylistic alternates.

Classification

A proportional grotesque sans derived from a fixed-width source, retaining monospace quirks while adapting for general text and display use. Its idiosyncratic details sit outside clean geometric or humanist traditions, placing it firmly in grotesque territory.
