A 57-style custom type system designed by Henning Skibbe for the Süddeutsche Zeitung's redesign, covering serif, sans-serif and condensed subfamilies for print and digital use.

About

Developed between 2012 and 2022 as part of a full redesign of one of Germany's largest daily newspapers, the system spans four main subfamilies: SZ Serif, SZ Serif Condensed, SZ Sans, SZ Sans Condensed, SZ Sans Digital and SZ Text. Each of the 57 styles carries over 700 glyphs and supports an extensive set of OpenType features including small caps, old-style figures, tabular figures and arrows. The system is deployed across all of the SZ's brand channels, from broadsheet print to web and digital platforms.

Classification

A custom type system built around serif and sans-serif subfamilies for a major daily newspaper, with the serif at its core; designed for high-performance print and screen legibility across editorial contexts.
