Focal specimen from Commercial Type

Greg Gazdowicz's revival of the 1970s phototype feel, with a small x-height main cut and a big x-height Maxi companion.

About

A serif family by Greg Gazdowicz that reads as a revival of an era rather than a single face. Focal captures the warm, slightly degraded quality of 1970s print as hot metal gave way to phototypesetting, with a relatively small x-height that bucks recent trends. Focal Maxi flips one of the period's other hallmarks, the giant x-height popularised by ITC and Adrian Frutiger's Vectora, giving you a sibling face built for tighter measures and smaller sizes. Six weights run from Light to Black with italics throughout. Good for editorial brands and books that want familiar warmth without straight pastiche.

Classification

Commercial Type frame Focal as a phototype-era revival rather than a particular face, capturing the warm, slightly degraded quality of 1970s print as hot metal gave way to phototypesetting.
