A text serif by Jim Parkinson drawn from Nicholas Jenson's Renaissance types, designed to soften the mechanical rigidity of ATF Jenson whilst retaining its historical character.

About

Jim Parkinson returned to the original Jenson types as his touchstone after two decades of type design, intending to create something less rigid than ATF Jenson, itself a mechanised interpretation that lost much of the warmth of the Renaissance original. The family comprises four styles: Medium and ExtraBold, each with a matching italic. Suited to books, magazines and long-form editorial work where a contemporary text face with old-style warmth is required.

Classification

Benicia traces its lineage directly to Nicholas Jenson's Renaissance types, interpreted with modern refinements; it sits firmly in the old-style serif tradition, informed by humanist proportions rather than the mechanical rigidity of ATF Jenson or Bodoni revivals.
