Originally commissioned by Red Hat and later developed with Google Fonts sponsorship, Overpass v4.0 brings nine static weights from Thin to Heavy, each with an italic, plus variable font support across weight and slant axes. The design traces its letterforms back to the Federal Highway Administration's traffic sign specifications, with adjustments made for screen legibility and display use. Overpass Mono accompanies the proportional family with five weights tuned specifically for programming environments, and the combined family covers over 305 languages.
Classification
Derived from the U.S. Federal Highway Administration's Standard Alphabets for Traffic Control Devices, Overpass carries the open, legible proportions of highway signage letterforms, placing it firmly in the humanist sans tradition.
