About
Asfalt takes its formal cues from the vertically elongated letterforms painted on road surfaces, designed to read as correctly proportioned from the low angle of an approaching driver. A stencilled road lettering specimen from Niggli's mid-century Lettera series and a Brazilian road-signage manual found in a Rio de Janeiro thrift shop anchored the design process. Five width variants from Compressed to Expanded, each in four weights, give the family considerable range across poster work, editorial design and identity systems where a strong vernacular character is needed.
Classification
Rooted in painted road lettering and mid-century stencil lettering, Asfalt's elongated, vertically stretched forms make it a display face with a functional vernacular origin rather than a conventional text or grotesque classification.
