Originally drawn by Fabian Harb as a three-weight utilitarian face called Gothic No. 6, the family was later expanded with Seb McLauchlan adding italics, small caps, old-style figures and a mono counterpart. The 28 styles span Thin to Black across three subfamilies: Marfa, Marfa Mono and Marfa Semi Mono, all available as variable fonts. Spacing and kerning were handled by Igino Marini, and the family has seen use across cultural institutions, galleries and editorial work.
Classification
Marfa draws directly from early American gothic typefaces of the hot metal era, placing it firmly in the grotesque tradition. Its utilitarian structure, ink-trap sensibility and monolinear rhythm are characteristic of 19th-century American gothics.
