serifbaroque transitional serifitalic
Tobias specimen from Displaay Type Foundry

A baroque transitional serif by Martin Vacha, sibling to Teodor and Reckless, with diagonal stress, punched arches and alternate serif directions.

About

A baroque transitional serif by Martin Vacha released in January 2019. Eight weights and sixteen styles, with a two-axis variable font on Weight and Slant. Diagonal weight stress and stem arches that punch into the verticals carry the baroque DNA, and a higher than usual x-height keeps the family workable in setting. Terminals are built from drops and ears, with alternates that play with different directions of serifs.

Classification

Displaay describes Tobias as a serif with baroque and transitional appearance, with diagonal weight stress as in Old-Style or Renaissance designs. Higher than usual x-height and stem arches that punch into rather than smooth onto the stems. Terminals carry baroque drops and ears, with alternates flipping serif directions.
