Yanagi specimen from ECAL Typefaces

A brush-drawn display typeface inspired by the design practice of Sori Yanagi, with reversed contrast and a compact structure suited to large-scale use.

About

Drawn from scratch using only poster paper and brushes, Yanagi emerged from a making process rather than a predetermined plan. The reversed stroke contrast and tight proportions give it a weight and presence at display sizes that feels rooted in physical gesture rather than digital construction. Designer Jamie Michiki worked between 2024 and 2026, channelling the understated simplicity associated with Sori Yanagi's industrial design philosophy.

Classification

Drawn entirely with poster paper and brushes, Yanagi has a reversed stroke contrast and compact structure rooted in Japanese calligraphic tradition, placing it firmly in the display category with a brush-derived subcategory.
