Motif
EPI · 2023

A variable display typeface drawing on the graphic language of petrol stations, car advertisements and racecar livery.
About
Motif takes its cues from mid-century automotive lettering, the kind found on gas station signage, racing numbers and period car ads, and renders it through a brutalist lens. The variable font spans a width axis from compressed to expanded, with named styles at Condensed, Regular and Extended, each with a slanted companion. Character support covers Latin Extended with a range of OpenType features including alternate figures, discretionary ligatures and stylistic sets.
Classification
Described explicitly as a brutalist interpretation of automotive typography from gas stations, car ads and racecar decoration, placing it firmly in display territory with an expressive, referential character.
