Tschichold conceived this design in 1930 as a letterform simple enough for anyone to draw without typographic training, rooted in the Bauhaus geometric principles he encountered at the 1923 Weimar exhibition. Sebastian Nagel's 2008 revival expands the original single black weight into a seven-weight family spanning Light to Black, adding a full Latin 1 character set, small caps and OpenType features including contextual alternates for shorter f and long-s forms. Intended for display use in logos and headlines rather than continuous text.
