Developed after Felix Braden failed to find a suitable offline counterpart for Verdana, FF Scuba sits slightly tighter and more condensed than its screen-optimised reference, making it better suited to print. At small sizes it holds up well alongside Verdana, while at larger sizes the tension between an almost rectangular 'o', inward-tapering stems and more fluid, written elements gives the typeface a distinctive character. The combination of technical construction and calligraphic energy keeps the design from feeling purely mechanical.
