Martin Majoor's old-style serif, originally designed for a Dutch concert hall and notable as one of the first serif-and-sans superfamilies.

About

FF Scala was released through FontFont in 1991, designed by Martin Majoor for Muziekcentrum Vredenburg in Utrecht. Drawing on historic models including Dwiggins's Electra and Gill's Joanna, it has a warmly classical character. The addition of FF Scala Sans in 1993 made it one of the first serif-plus-sans superfamilies. It has been used by KLM and the US Department of Homeland Security, and was reissued under Majoor's own foundry in 2023.

Classification

Old-style serif originally commissioned for Muziekcentrum Vredenburg in Utrecht. Named after Teatro alla Scala, Milan. Features small caps, ligatures, text figures and condensed variants. FF Scala Sans (1993) created a matching sans companion, forming one of the early superfamily pairings. Reissued under Majoor's own foundry in 2023.
