Spun off from the Cafeteria family, Asphalt takes on the dense optical mass of Roger Excoffon's Antique Olive Nord and adds a playful, swinging energy that Frere-Jones himself describes as a "lively, if faintly inebriated, gyration". The family offers just two styles, Black and Condensed Black, making it a specialist tool for headlines and posters rather than a workhorse. Its narrow remit sharpens its voice considerably.
