Exchange
Frere-Jones · Tobias Frere-Jones

A newspaper text face by Tobias Frere-Jones that draws on Ionic slab serifs and Victorian text traditions to hold legibility at small sizes across print and screen.
About
Originally drawn for newspaper columns, Exchange borrows its approach to word-shape coherence from early Ionic slabs and takes lessons in letter individuality from Bell Gothic. The compact proportions suit both narrow newspaper columns and mobile screens, and the MicroPlus subfamily extends its capability into digital text settings including web and video. Eighteen styles span two optical subfamilies, Standard and MicroPlus, each running from Light to Bold with italics throughout.
Classification
Exchange draws on early Ionic slab serif traditions and Victorian text faces for word-shape coherence, while incorporating lessons from Bell Gothic; its bracketed serifs and text-optimised proportions place it within the transitional/newspaper serif tradition rather than a pure slab category.
