About
Begun as an independent study at Rhode Island School of Design when no formal type design instruction was available, Frere-Jones turned to Jenson as a starting point for understanding letterforms. Completed in 1994 for use in the AIGA Journal, the family comprises a roman and a matching italic, with the roman faithful to the Venetian style: rising crossbar on the lowercase e, oldstyle figures and small capitals. The italic takes a more open, contemporary approach rather than mimicking a strict chancery model.
