Supermassive
Frere-Jones · Tobias Frere-Jones

A cap-only display family in three styles by Tobias Frere-Jones, built around extreme weight and density drawn from 1960s handlettering traditions.
About
Three headline styles that push mass and density to an extreme, using long superelliptical curves and a deliberate tension between vertical and horizontal stroke weights. Minimal negative spaces bring the letterforms to a precarious heaviness while retaining enough idiosyncrasy to avoid the anonymity of generic ultra-bolds. Designed for headlines and larger, it works only in capitals, with contributions from Rosie Mai, Fred Shallcrass and Nina Stössinger.
Classification
A cap-only display family of extreme weight and density, drawing on 1960s handlettering traditions with superelliptical curves; designed explicitly for headline and large-scale use with no text sizes.
