Obsidian
Hoefler & Co · Hoefler & Co (Andy Clymer, Jonathan Hoefler, Sara Soskolne) · 2015

A decorated display face that treats letterforms as three-dimensional objects, lit by virtual light sources to imitate engraved banknote and diploma lettering.
About
A decorated display family by H&Co that uses custom software to apply virtual highlights to letterforms, producing the engraved, dimensional look familiar from banknotes, diplomas and ornamental nineteenth-century printing. Built on the foundation of Surveyor, Obsidian spans roman and italic with around 1,400 glyphs, smart swashes that automatically improve text rhythm, and OpenType stylistic sets that swap in alternate looks. The result is a single-weight display face for packaging, certificates, luxury identity and editorial titling where you want overt ornament rather than a working text system.
Classification
H&Co position Obsidian as a decorated display face that uses digital means to achieve traditional ends. It treats Surveyor's letterforms as three-dimensional objects, with proprietary tools that apply virtual light sources at varying position, angle and intensity to produce engraved-style highlights.
