IvyMazarin specimen from Ivy Foundry

A 2026 revival of Robert Girard's 1921 Astrée, later issued as Mazarin by Stephenson Blake, drawing on rare archival specimens to reconstruct a French Garamond interpretation with cool crispness and a confident 12° italic slant.

About

Jan Maack worked from rare archival specimens to revive Astrée/Mazarin, refining proportions, raising the x-height and moderating ascenders while retaining the cool sharpness of the original italics. Historical quirks are preserved as OpenType features: a long-legged R, alternate Q, swashes, discretionary ligatures and small caps. Five weights with matching italics and variable fonts make it well suited to branding, editorial design and book typography.

Classification

A revival of a 1920s French interpretation of Garamond, placing it firmly in the old-style serif tradition with humanist roots and classical proportions refined for contemporary use.
