JL Jungka specimen from Jung-Lee Type Foundry

A collaborative grotesque by Karel Martens and Jungmyung Lee, drawn between the formal poles of Akzidenz Grotesk, Helvetica and Univers.

About

Developed between 2013 and 2015, the typeface places itself closer to Akzidenz Grotesk than to Helvetica or Univers, favouring autonomous letterform widths over the uniform grid logic of the latter two. Its accentuated circular curves give it a softer, more rhythmical quality while retaining the legibility expected of a classically informed text sans. Four weights run from Book to Bold, each with a companion italic, covering Latin Extended ranges for Western, Central and South Eastern European languages.

Classification

A grotesk sans-serif positioned deliberately between Akzidenz Grotesk, Helvetica and Univers, with autonomous letterform widths and accentuated circular curves characteristic of the 20th-century European grotesque tradition.
