JAF Johannes
Just Another Foundry · Shoko Mugikura & Tim Ahrens · 2014

A digitisation and extension of Johannes Schulz's 1930s Johannes-Type, split into a faithful revival and a version with redrawn contemporary letterforms.
About
Originally designed for the Genzsch & Heyse foundry in Hamburg, the source material has an unusual geometric-industrial quality that reads as 'Techno meets Blackletter' despite predating the aesthetic by decades. Shoko Mugikura and Tim Ahrens offer two sub-families: JAF Johannes Original stays close to Schulz's drawings, while JAF Johannes reworks select letters into more contemporary shapes. Each sub-family ships in two styles.
Classification
A digitisation of a 1930s blackletter typeface by Johannes Schulz, described as 'Techno meets Blackletter', placing it firmly in the blackletter category with an unusual geometric-industrial quality.
