Frequenz specimen from Kilotype

A deliberately unrefined grotesque by Selma Losch, where minimal optical correction and unconventional letter spacing create a purposefully irregular rhythm.

About

Designed by Selma Losch and published in 2018, Frequenz challenges the convention of optically perfecting letterforms, keeping proportions and stroke weights intentionally close to their raw origins. The family runs across six weights from Thin to Extra Bold, each with a matching italic, and covers more than 400 languages using the Latin alphabet. It is a companion to Sequenz, both exploring how far a typeface can deviate from orthodoxy while remaining functional.

Classification

Frequenz is a sans-serif with deliberately unconventional rhythm and minimal optical correction, placing it within the grotesque tradition but with a nonconformist, design-led sensibility rather than strict neutrality.
