Söhne
Klim Type Foundry · Kris Sowersby · 2019

A grotesque sans rooted in Akzidenz and Standard Medium, balancing analogue warmth with quiet authority for editorial and tech brands.
About
A neo-grotesque by Kris Sowersby drawn from the Standard Medium signage on Unimark's New York City Subway wayfinding and the wider Akzidenz-Grotesk lineage, with apertures slightly more open than Helvetica's and joints subtly thinned. Eight weights run from Extraleicht to Extrafett with Buch and Kräftig as the workhorse text cuts, and the system extends into Söhne Breit (wide), Söhne Schmal (condensed) and Söhne Mono. Used widely across editorial, tech and fashion when the brief calls for precise neutrality without sterility.
Classification
Klim classifies it as Lineal: Grotesque; described as the memory of Akzidenz-Grotesk framed through the reality of Helvetica, drawing on the Standard Medium used in Unimark's NYC Subway wayfinding.
